Postcard From Day 3
Dear me, it is 8:05 in the morning and the Giza gates opened five minutes ago. The stone is already warm under my hand. Last night’s small box of koshary cost under a dollar. Tomorrow is the early flight to Luxor, an hour in the air, and Karnak at opening time. I checked the budget at breakfast. I am under it, and I did not think I would be able to say that.

How Much Is a Trip to Egypt From the USA?

The Honest Answer
A 7-day trip to Egypt from New York costs about $1,600 per person at a Save level, about $2,600 at Mid-Range, and about $3,300 at a Splurge level, flights included. Once you land, Egypt is one of the best-value big-ticket destinations you can pick: the flight and your hotel are most of the bill, and everything else is surprisingly small.
Perfect for: history lovers, first-time Africa and Middle East travelers, and couples or friends who want a bucket-list trip without a bucket-list price on the ground.
Skip it if: you want a cheap long weekend (the flight alone is the biggest cost), or you are traveling solo and want total independence with no structure at all.

If you have been asking yourself how much is a trip to Egypt from the USA, you have probably already seen two kinds of answers: tour packages with one big number and no breakdown, and forum threads where someone swears they did it all for pocket change. What you need is the receipt, line by line, before you spend a dollar.
We priced a 7-day trip from New York: Cairo and Giza first, then a short flight down to Luxor for Karnak and the Nile. Every number below was checked this month against flight data, hotel averages, official ticket prices from Egypt’s Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities, and the US State Department’s entry rules.
This is for the traveler who has wanted to stand in front of the Great Pyramid for years and keeps putting it off because “Egypt sounds expensive.” It is less expensive than you think, but only if you know where the money really goes.
Egypt Trip Cost At a Glance
- Total, 7 days from New York: about $1,617 (Save), $2,590 (Mid-Range), $3,260 (Splurge) per person
- Biggest cost: the round-trip flight, typically $773 to $1,125 from New York
- Hotels in Cairo: about $82 a night at 3 stars, $182 at 4 stars, $232 at 5 stars
- Visa: $36 by card at Cairo airport, or $30 in exact US cash at other entry points
- Currency: 1 US dollar is about 52.3 Egyptian pounds (EGP)
What Shapes the Cost of an Egypt Trip
Three things decide your total: when you fly, what kind of room you sleep in, and whether you add Luxor. Food, rides and entry tickets matter far less than people expect. Three simple local meals in Cairo come to about $15 a day, and the Giza Plateau entry ticket is about $13.
That means the smartest money moves happen before you leave: booking the right month, choosing a hotel level you will actually use, and planning Luxor so you are not paying for a second day you did not need. If Luxor is on your list, the guide we built for that leg of the trip plans both days from morning to evening. Grab your copy here.
Flights From the US
The flight is the single biggest line on your receipt. KAYAK’s route data for New York to Cairo shows round trips typically between $773 and $1,125, with the cheapest fare found recently at $683. EgyptAir is the only airline flying nonstop on the route, at about 10 hours and 20 minutes. Every other airline connects.
If your dates are flexible, February is the cheapest month to fly from New York to Cairo, averaging about $749 round trip.
Where You’ll Sleep

Cairo’s hotel prices jump sharply between levels, so pick yours with intent. HotelsCombined’s current averages for Cairo:
- Save (3-star): about $82 a night.
- Mid-Range (4-star): about $182 a night.
- Splurge (5-star): about $232 a night. The gap between 4 and 5 stars is small in Cairo, so if you are already paying Mid-Range, the upgrade is worth pricing.
These are averages per room, so two people sharing pay the same nightly rate. That is the single easiest way to bring your per-person cost down.
Food and Drink

This is where Egypt feels almost unfair. Numbeo’s October 2026 data puts an inexpensive restaurant meal in Cairo at about $4.79, a three-course meal for two at a mid-range restaurant at about $28.73, and a cappuccino at $1.78.
Go lower and it gets better. At Koshary Abou Tarek in Downtown Cairo, a box of koshary (rice, lentils, pasta and chickpeas under spiced tomato sauce and crispy onions) runs from EGP 45 to EGP 110 on its current menu. That is roughly 90 cents to $2.10 for a meal that will keep you going through an afternoon of museums.
For the receipt, we priced Save as three simple local meals a day, Mid-Range as two local meals plus a sit-down dinner and a coffee, and Splurge as two mid-range sit-down meals, a casual lunch and two coffees every day.
Getting Around

Inside Cairo, metered taxi rates on Numbeo are about $0.38 to start plus about $0.31 per mile, so a 10-mile ride across the city costs roughly $3.50.
Between cities, fly. Cairo to Luxor is about 1 hour and 5 minutes in the air, EgyptAir alone runs 49 nonstop flights a week, and KAYAK shows typical round trips between $210 and $282. That one flight turns Luxor from a long overnight journey into an easy side trip.
If you are adding Luxor, the details that make those two days work (what to see when, and where to eat and stay) are all in the full Luxor guide, so you can land and just go.
Sights and Tickets

Entry fees in Egypt are set by the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities, and they are refreshingly small next to the flight:
- Giza Plateau: EGP 700 for foreign adults, open daily 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM. This covers the plateau, not the inside of the Great Pyramid or the other pyramids, which need separate tickets.
- Karnak Temple, Luxor: EGP 600, including the Open Museum, open daily 6:00 AM to 5:00 PM. The Mut Temple inside Karnak is an extra EGP 200.
- Grand Egyptian Museum: $30 for foreign adults, rising by $5 to $35 from November 1, 2026 (as announced in April and May 2026). Galleries stay open until 9:00 PM on Wednesdays and Saturdays, with last entry one hour before closing.
At today’s rate of about 52.3 pounds to the dollar, Giza and Karnak together come to about $25. Add the museum at the new price and your three headline sights cost about $60 in total.
The Trip Receipt
Here is the whole trip, line by line. It assumes 7 days, one traveler in their own room, Cairo and Giza plus a Luxor side trip by air.
THE TRIP RECEIPT
7 days in Egypt, per person, from New York. Estimate, prices checked October 2026
| Item | Save | Mid | Splurge |
|---|---|---|---|
| Flight, New York to Cairo, round trip | $683 | $900 | $1,125 |
| Flight, Cairo to Luxor, round trip | $210 | $252 | $282 |
| Hotels, 6 nights | $492 | $1,092 | $1,392 |
| Visa on arrival | $36 | $36 | $36 |
| Giza, Karnak and GEM tickets | $60 | $60 | $60 |
| Food and drink, 7 days | $101 | $180 | $260 |
| Local rides, 7 days | $35 | $70 | $105 |
| TOTAL | $1,617 | $2,590 | $3,260 |
A few notes on how we built it. Save uses the cheapest recent New York fare, Mid uses the middle of the typical range, and Splurge uses the top of it, all in economy. Hotels are 3, 4 and 5 star city averages. Rides are a mix of short taxi trips, rising from about $5 a day to about $15. Tips, souvenirs, travel insurance and pyramid interior tickets are not included, so leave room for them.
How to Spend Less
- Fly in February if you can. It is the cheapest month on the New York to Cairo route, at about $749 round trip on average.
- Share a room. Hotel rates are per room, so a couple at Mid-Range saves more than $1,000 compared with two solo travelers.
- Bring exact US cash for the visa if you land outside Cairo. The State Department says it is $30 in exact change at other entry points, while Cairo airport charges $36 by card.
- Pay in Egyptian pounds. When a card machine offers to charge you in dollars, choose pounds, so the merchant is not setting your exchange rate.
- Eat where Cairo eats. A koshary box from EGP 45 is a full meal, and a sit-down dinner for two is still under $30.
What Most Blogs Won’t Tell You
The Giza ticket is not the pyramid ticket. The EGP 700 plateau entry does not include going inside the Great Pyramid, Khafre, Menkaure or several tombs. Those are separate tickets, so check them on the day if going inside matters to you.
The cheapest month for one flight is the priciest for the other. February is the cheapest month to fly New York to Cairo, but KAYAK flags February as the costliest month on the Cairo to Luxor route. Book the domestic leg early if you are going in winter.
The museum price is changing mid-season. The Grand Egyptian Museum adds $5 for foreign visitors from November 1, 2026. Small, but it catches people who priced their trip months ago.
The visa is not optional, and the payment method matters. US citizens need a visa. Card works at Cairo airport; at other entry points it is exact US cash only. Your passport also needs six months of validity and a blank page.
Safety affects where your money goes. The State Department lists Egypt at Level 2, Exercise Increased Caution (issued July 15, 2025, still current in October 2026). Read the full advisory before you book, because some regions carry a higher warning than the country overall.
Why You Need the 2 Days in Luxor Guide
This post gives you a real, workable budget for Egypt. You can book flights and a Cairo hotel from it today. But the difference between a good trip and a flawless one lives in the details, and Luxor is where those details pile up: which side of the river to start on, what to see before the heat, and how to fit Karnak, the West Bank and the Nile into two days without wasting either one.
The 2 Days in Luxor guide covers exactly that. It gives you a morning to evening plan for both days built around Karnak Temple, Luxor Temple, the Valley of the Kings and the Temple of Hatshepsut, plus hotel picks across budgets, Egyptian restaurants and local favorites, what to wear for temples and evenings on the Nile, a packing list for Luxor’s climate, and tips for beating the crowds and finding the best sunset spots. It is a digital guide for $10.
You’ve already done the hard part: deciding Egypt is happening and figuring out what it costs. The guide just makes sure the Luxor leg is as good as the rest of the trip.

Your Luxor days are waiting.

Final Thoughts on the Cost of Egypt
If the cost has been the thing keeping Egypt on your someday list, look at the receipt again. At the Save level, a whole week of pyramids, temples, Nile views and very good food on the ground costs less than the flights that get you there.
The honest catch is that Egypt rewards planning. The cheap version and the great version can be the same price; the difference is knowing which ticket covers what, when to book the Luxor flight, and how to use your hours on the ground.
